Balanced/Tiered/Hybrid

Every season, once registration closes, HYS looks at all the players that have registered for each group.  Depending on the skill levels of the group we decide what kind of teams we will form to give all players the most successful outcome.

There are three options for teams.

  1. BALANCED TEAMS - aim for parity
  2. TIERED TEAMS - sort by skill
  3. HYBRID TEAMS - combination of both

*There is no way to know what kind of teams will be formed prior to the close of registration.

BALANCED TEAMS — Balanced teams are just that – balanced by age and ability. All players registered and eligible for teams in the age group are evaluated and ranked based upon ability. This includes a combination of tryouts (where appropriate and completed) and coach evaluation. From there, players are distributed across the rosters evenly, so every team has a roster balanced by ability in comparison with one another.

  • For example, the four teams would be A1, A2, A3 and A4.

TIERED TEAM - Tiered teams are compiled so that players are based competitively by their ability. All players registered and eligible for teams in the age group are evaluated and ranked based upon ability. This includes a combination of tryouts (where appropriate and completed) and coach evaluation. From there, players are distributed in order of ability to form teams that are not equal in strength and competitiveness.

  • For example, the four teams created would be A, B C and D.

HYBRID TEAM this means that the age group can be allowed a mixture of tiered and balanced teams to sufficiently meet the needs of players in the age group and all players have a developmentally appropriate team to participate in.

  • FOR 4th GRADE — The hybrid system looks like balancing the top and balancing the bottom.  For example, the four teams would be A1, A2, B1, B2.
  • FOR 5th GRADE AND UP — The hybrid system looks like tiering the top and balancing the bottom.  For example, the four teams would be A1, A2, B and C. Or they might be A, B, C1 and C2.
